Did A Holy God Create Evil?

That is a deep question that has been debated for centuries. I do not begin to say that I have all the answers. The answers that I have came from reading the Scripture with the Holy Spirit’s help. I did look up what others said on the issue but mostly for the Scripture references and the arguments against certain views. Feel free to point out my errors or to add to my knowledge.

I’ll start with the hardest verse:

Isa 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things. KJV

So let us break this apart. “I form the light …”

Gen 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. KJV

“…and create darkness…” – God formed the light for the world – the sun, moon and stars. When he formed the light, the absence of light was darkness.

Gen 1:4-5
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night.

Just by removing the light, darkness is created. Jesus is the light of the world and when we believe in Him there is no darkness in our lives.

John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. KJV

God’s Word is a light for us and when it is removed (or not obeyed) there is darkness.

Ps 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. KJV

“… I make peace…” – This is the well-known Hebrew word Shalom, meaning peace, prosperity, happiness, friendliness and safety. Shalom means overall goodness of every form. God is the creator of all good things.

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. KJV

Ps 34:14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. KJV

Ps 119:165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. KJV

Isa 48:22 There is no peace, saith the Lord, unto the wicked. KJV

Jer 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. KJV

Christ is our peace.

Eph 2:13-14
13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

3 John 11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God. KJV

“… and create evil…” – Evil is the Hebrew word Ra`, which means bad, adversity, grief, misery and wrong.

Those that want the good must stay away from the evil, which is the opposite of good.

Ps 34:14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. KJV

1 Peter 3:10-11
10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:
11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it

Mark 7:20-23
20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

James 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: KJV

Ezek 28:15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. KJV

God did not create evil in the sense of doing evil or making it. God is perfect and pure and in His absence evil exists. Just as when you turn off a light there is darkness but you didn’t create darkness but just removed the source of light. When God who is all good removes even just a portion of Himself from the situation then there is evil, the absence of good.

Mark 10:18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. KJV

Ps 25:8 Good and upright is the Lord: therefore will he teach sinners in the way. KJV

Ps 86:5 For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee. KJV

Ps 100:5 For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations. KJV

God is the creator of peace and good and the lack of God’s peace and good is evil. Just as God is the source and creator of love and the lack of love is fear.

2 Timothy 1:7 – For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. KJV

1 John 4:18 – There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. KJV

Sin is the absence or rejection of God. Sin is being separated from God and His Law.

1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. KJV

Christ died for our sins so that He who knew no sin would bear our sins on the cross.

Romans 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? KJV

Romans 8:39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. KJV

The Lord is restraining Satan through the Holy Spirit’s presence in the world. At some point in the future, the Lord will remove his restraining influence from the world and turn Satan loose to wreck havoc just before Satan is judged along with his followers.

2 Thess 2:6-12
6 And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. NKJV

“… I the Lord do all these things.” Nothing at all happens without the Lord allowing it even Satan is restrained until the end times. Each and every one of us are restrained from the pure evil that we could do by the restraining influence of the Lord. If you think things are bad now just think how bad they could be with out Him. Thankfully, our Lord does not judge us immediately but is patient with us.

Isa 48:9 “For my name’s sake I defer my anger, for the sake of my praise I restrain it for you, that I may not cut you off. ESV
