Here are some additional thoughts on the masculinity of God. This is from a pastor, Gerald Hiestand, who is with James MacDonald”s Church Harvest Bible Chapel. Maybe I should retitle my post Why is God Referred to as Male? to Why is God refered to as Masculine.
Godself, Jesusself, and Paulself
We naturally understand that when a masculine person utilizes feminine imagery to describe a particular activity he is engaged in, he does not in any way intend to communicate he is sans gender.
Thus masculinity as a concept equates to dominance and autonomy, while femininity equates to deference and dependence. In other words, the masculine person is masculine precisely because he occupies a position of greater autonomy and power in relation to another. In as much as we—mere creatures—occupy a position of dependence in relation to God, it is appropriate for us to view him and speak of him in masculine categories.
…
It is not without consequence therefore, that God, when wishing to convey who he is in relation to his creation referrers to himself using primarily male language and imagery. God is neither male nor female. But he is masculine, and has taken pains to reveal himself as such.
