  1. I found the repeated denigrations of various women based on their looks reprehensible coming from the pulpit. Think about this again. Instead of saying that the outward doesn’t matter this man says , yep! they do. You can be without makeup as long as you don’t look haggard or wear a denim skirt.

    Woman in a Denim Skirt,

I’m sorry but the Bible itself points out the outward appearance of sensuous women.

Proverbs 7:10 And behold, the woman meets him, dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart.

Appearance does matter. Appearance and attire reveal the inner heart. In the above verse she is said to be “wily of heart”. We are to glorify the Lord in all we do. That includes our attire. The average woman dresses in order to glorify her body, not the Lord.

The only time I’ve heard Washer address denim skirts is when he was dealing with a common legalism where women have been taught unbiblical legal rules of dress. Wearing a denim skirt does not make you more Holy than those who do not wear them. Both sensuality and legalism are sinful.

I agree that he could have been kinder in his approach. There are a multitude of reasons why one may be dressed in a certain manner. There is much need in the average church to deal with the sensuality and also the legalism in what women wear. Some dress in certain ways because of lack of knowledge, lack of resources, due to the desires of a husband and for sinful reasons. Washer is focusing on the two extreme sinful reasons, sensuality and legalism, without dealing with the other reasons. You just can’t cover everything in a sermon.

However, I do agree with you that jokes and poking fun at those who may or may not be sinning is at least unwise, if not prideful and arrogant.

Praise God for women like you who actually seek to search and apply the scriptures to daily life. May God raise up more like you… as a man I can testify that we are more stimulated visually by the eye than women are. We already have to deal with sensuality in our own hearts and the world we shouldn’t have to see our sisters being stumbling blocks when we come to the place of worship. Grace & Peace…. Soli Deo Gloria!
