Wear that is commonly called “Jesus-wear” is a fad that has been around for years. Youth groups try to outdo each other in the “best” Christian T-shirt. There is always a new slogan or verse found to “share the gospel” with the passersby. I won’t go into why I feel that most of that is a cheapening of the gospel and a poor witness. However, I will discuss a particular problem I see with ladies wearing such printed clothing.
Sometimes t-shirts have a printed back but usually they also include printing right across the chest area or at least on one side of the chest. The use of such T-shirts is immodest because it is calling attention to the chest in a female. Why should we encourage others to linger over a part of the body that they should not be looking at?
Job 31:1 “I have made a covenant with my eyes; Why then should I look upon a young woman?” NKJV
What about youth with words emblazoned over the rear of their sweatpants or shorts? I’ve actually seen them be worn in church before. Why does no one think about the consequences of their actions anymore? What purpose does it serve to have words written across areas of the body that others should not be looking at? It is to draw their attention.
I won’t even get started on “Christian” girls wearing the word “Hottie” on their clothes !!!
Walking Billboards – Stacy McDonald
Recently, in a department store with my children, I noticed a mother shopping with her teenaged daughter. The daughter’s attire made my heart sink. It was not the typical, tight, low-slung blue jeans she wore, nor the clingy t-shirt that revealed her midriff that made me shake my head, although they were noticeable enough. What grieved me most were the ironic words emblazoned across her chest: “What Would Jesus Do?”
…
Even if the words on the front of her shirt were not so blatantly incongruous with her attire, would it be any better? She would still be using her chest as a billboard, giving everyone she meets an open invitation to stare somewhere they shouldn’t. In fact, it’s more than an invitation, because even those who might attempt to avert their eyes from looking at a girl’s chest may find themselves overtaken by curiosity, and look anyway—at least long enough to read the words.
