Former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore looks into the question of Bingo in Etowah County.
King denied access to bingo case; Moore’s law firm seeks to intervene
Moore, an Etowah County resident and a former circuit judge, opposes bingo gambling in Etowah County and believes it’s an illegal lottery that is prohibited by state law.
Moore said bingo gambling posing as “electronic bingo” is illegal and he wants to intervene as a “friend of the court” to argue his position.
Moore said he supports the Etowah Baptist Association that has intervened to stop the commission from allowing electronic machine bingo “in the county even though ‘bingo’ is defined in the law as a game of the traditional ‘card or paper’ variety.
“The gambling special interests in Alabama are constantly coming up with new and creative ways to try to subvert the anti-gambling provisions of the Alabama Constitution,” Moore said in a statement. “This latest attempt to portray video gambling machines as mere bingo in Etowah County is simply another devious attempt to expand gambling in Alabama.”
