The Day of the Lord

Do you know what the Day of the Lord refers to? I’m sure I missed some but this is a start.

Old Testament references

Amos 5:18 Day of the Lord – judgment by Assyrians

Amos 5:18 Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord! Why would you have the day of the Lord? It is darkness, and not light,” ESV

Obadiah 1:15 Day of the Lord – judgment upon Edom and the nations but salvation for God’s people

Obad 15 For the day of the Lord is near upon all the nations. As you have done, it shall be done to you; your deeds shall return on your own head.” ESV

Zephaniah 1:7, 1:14 Day of the Lord – judgment on Judah and the nations & refuge for those who humble themselves.

Zeph 1:7 Be silent before the Lord God! For the day of the Lord is near; the Lord has prepared a sacrifice and consecrated his guests.” ESV

Zeph 1:14 The great day of the Lord is near, near and hastening fast; the sound of the day of the Lord is bitter; the mighty man cries aloud there.” ESV

Malachi 4:5 Day of the Lord – coming of the Lord (see Malachi 3:17)

Mal 4:5 “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.” ESV

Mal 3:17 “They shall be mine, says the Lord of hosts, in the day when I make up my treasured possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him.” ESV

Isaiah 13:6,9 Day of the Lord – judgment of Babylon and promises terror and wrath (see Isaiah 2:12; 34:8)

Isa 13:6 Wail, for the day of the Lord is near; as destruction from the Almighty it will come! ESV

Isa 13:9 Behold, the day of the Lord comes, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger, to make the land a desolation and to destroy its sinners from it. ESV

Isa 2:12 For the Lord of hosts has a day against all that is proud and lofty, against all that is lifted up—and it shall be brought low;ESV

Isa 34:8 For the Lord has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.ESV

Jeremiah 46:10 Day of the Lord – devouring sword – judgment of Egypt and promises vengeance

Jer 46:10 That day is the day of the Lord God of hosts, a day of vengeance, to avenge himself on his foes. The sword shall devour and be sated and drink its fill of their blood. For the Lord God of hosts holds a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.” ESV

Ezekiel 13:5; 30:3 Day of the Lord – False prophets have led Israel astray – “day of clouds” and a “time of doom”

Ezek 13:5 You have not gone up into the breaches, or built up a wall for the house of Israel, that it might stand in battle in the day of the Lord. ESV

Ezek 30:3 For the day is near, the day of the Lord is near; it will be a day of clouds, a time of doom for the nations. ESV

Joel 1:15; 2:1-2, 2:11, 2:31; 3:14 – Day of the Lord – locust invasion, judgment on Israel and the nations and final vindication of God and his people.

Joel 1:15 Alas for the day! For the day of the Lord is near, and as destruction from the Almighty it comes.ESV

Joel 2:1-2 1 Blow a trumpet in Zion; sound an alarm on my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming; it is near,
2 a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness! Like blackness there is spread upon the mountains a great and powerful people; their like has never been before, nor will be again after them through the years of all generations.

Joel 2:11 The Lord utters his voice before his army, for his camp is exceedingly great; he who executes his word is powerful. For the day of the Lord is great and very awesome; who can endure it? ESV

Joel 2:31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. ESV

Joel 3:14 Multitudes, multitudes, in the valley of decision! For the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision. ESV

Zechariah 14:1 Day of the Lord – the spoils taken from you will be divided in front of you.

Zech 14:1 Behold, a day is coming for the Lord, when the spoil taken from you will be divided in your midst. ESV

New Testament references:

1 Corinthians 1:8 Day of Our Lord Jesus Christ – future day of judgment – Christ will keep you blameless

1 Cor 1:8 who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. ESV

1 Corinthians 5:5 – Day of the Lord – deliver a sinner to Satan for destruction of his flesh, so that his soul maybe saved

1 Cor 5:5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord. ESV

2 Corinthians 1:14 – Day of Our Lord Jesus – acknowledge one another – Jesus is assigned the role of judge that was attributed to God in the Old Testament

2 Cor 1:14 just as you did partially acknowledge us, that on the day of our Lord Jesus you will boast of us as we will boast of you.ESV

Philippians 2:16 – the Day of Christ – be proud that you did not run in vain

Phil 2:16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. ESV

1 Thessalonians 5:2 – the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night

1 Thess 5:2 For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. ESV

Luke 17:24 – The Son of Man in His Day – as lightening flashes in the sky

Luke 17:24 For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day. ESV

Revelation 6:17 – the Great Day of Their Wrath – judgment

Revelation 6:17 “…for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?”
