Music Communicates – Quotes

While discussing music, I have tried to point out that music is a form of communication. And that as a form of communication that music is not neutral.

Here are some varied quotes from musicians that show they feel the music (tune) itself communicates.

“Words make you think a thought.
Music makes you feel a feeling.
A song makes you feel a thought.”

~ E. Y. Harburg

“The aim and final end of all music
should be none other than the glory of God
and the refreshment of the soul.”

~ Johann Sebastian Bach

“Music speaks what cannot be expressed,
soothes the mind and gives it rest,
heals the heart and makes it whole,
flows from heaven to the soul.”

~ Unknown

“Where words fail, music speaks.”
~ Hans Christian Andersen

“Music expresses that which
cannot be put into words
and cannot remain silent”

~ Victor Hugo

“Music is the hardest kind of art.
It doesn’t hang up on a wall
and wait to be stared at and enjoyed by passersby.
It’s communication.
It’s hours and hours being put into a work of art
that may only last, in reality, for a few moments…
but if done well, and truly appreciated,
it lasts in our hearts forever.
That’s art.
Speaking with your heart to the hearts of others.”

~ Mr. Dan Romano

“Bach gave us God’s word,
Mozart gave us God’s laughter,
Beethoven gave us God’s fire.
God gave us music that we might pray without words.”

~ On an old Opera Hall

“Music expresses feelings words cannot.”
~ Unknown

“Music can name the unnamable
and communicate the unknowable.”

~ Leonard Bernstein
