How do you reconcile the verse in Luke 16:18 and the verse in Mark 10:11-12 with Matthew 5:32?

Luke 16:18 “Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery. ESV

Mark 10:11-12
11 And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her,
12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”
ESV

Matthew 5:32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. ESV

That is a tough one and never before had I heard a sermon on how to reconcile those verses until the few I’ve listened to lately. So how do you reconcile those verses or how does your pastor reconcile them?

Just a disclaimer, I’m not saying that divorce and remarriage is any different than any other sin anyone might commit. Nor are those who have divorced and remarried second class citizens or of lesser standing due to that particular sin. Nor are the divorced and remarried not able to be used by the Lord. We are all sinners and some of us are sinners saved by Grace.

So why spend so much time talking about divorce?

Why not just say divorce is wrong or a sin and move on?

  • Because divorce is an “acceptable” sin in the average church in America and very little is said against divorce.
  • Divorce and remarriage is one of the few sins that have a lasting impact on a believer and their family. The impact lasts forever, can you imagine the genealogy people trying to chart family trees in today’s time? Families are torn apart all over the world due to divorce.
  • The children of divorced parents face special challenges that must be recognized and dealt with in society and the church.
  • But most importantly divorce is a stain on the picture of marriage as reflecting the relationship between Christ and the Church.
