Godly Womanhood – Peter Marshall

“Godly womanhood….the very phrase sounds strange in our ears. We never hear it now. We hear about every other type of women: beautiful women, smart women, sophisticated women, career women, talented women, divorced women. But so seldom do we hear of a godly women–or of a godly man either for that matter.

We believe women come nearer to fulfilling their God-given function in the home than anywhere else. It is a much nobler thing to be a good wife, than to be Miss America. It is a greater achievement to establish a Christian home than it is to produce a second-rate novel filled with filth. It is a far, far better thing in the realms of morals to be old-fashioned, than to be ultra modern.

The world has enough women who know how to be smart. It needs women who are willing to be simple. The world has enough women who know how to be brilliant. It needs some who will be brave. The world has enough women who are popular. It needs more who are pure.

We need woman, and men, too, who would rather be morally right than socially correct.”

  1. I LOVE this statement, ‘The world has enough women who know how to be smart. It needs women who are willing to be simple. The world has enough women who know how to be brilliant. It needs some who will be brave. The world has enough women who are popular. It needs more who are pure.

Simple and pure, how wonderful is that?! This is so lacking in our ‘modern’ society, yet, we have young girls who see no purpose in life; teenage pregancy on the rise, young people harming themselves in frightening ways, sexual immorality which produces children no one wants or cares to take the responsibility for…thank you BW for this post.
May our gracious Heavenly Father be merciful to all.

    grace and peace to you

    Hey Lyn,

Sorry but some how your comment was delayed in coming in.

You know the saddest part is all that activity, sin and immorality is for the purpose of being happy. However, it leads to more and more unhappiness. So they must add more activity and excitement in the hopes of finally becoming happy. But it never works. Happiness will only be found when we rest in the Lord.

This is so powerful, BW. I was thinking this morning about a conversation I had yesterday with a Christian friend whose daughter attends school with my 3 older girls.

Her daughter is much more active in extracurricular activities than mine are and she said that her daughter would never be happy coming home directly after school every day to “do nothing.” At the time I was frankly, a bit stunned, and I thought, well, maybe she’s right. Until it occurred to me that my daughters don’t come home to “do nothing.” They help me cook dinner. They paly with their younger siblings, they read books (and yes, watch the occasional tv program), they talk to me and to one another. In short, they come home to be part of their family rather than spend 3 hours in addition to the 7 they just spent with their peers.

How sad is it that even among Christians, the notion of worldly pursuits is esteemed higher than the simplicity and purity of family life?

    Terry,

That mom would probably deny that she has trained her daughter to be discontented at home. There are lots of girls, and boys, being trained to always be on the go, never spend time with family and be “bored” when home with family. It is amazing at how something so simple as after school activities can lead to life challenging problems later own. Simplicity is a lost art although thankfully there are a few that are starting to find a simple life is a happier more peaceful life.

  3. If pursued with diligence, the godly woman who the woman who FIGHTS to honor God in the midst of ENDURING trials (and hourly battles)–praise God for women who fear the Lord.
It’s quite ridiculous to me, that a women would strive to take the curse given to Adam!?

    Berean Wife Reply:

    Julius,

When women take on the curse given to Adam they also lose the blessings specific to being women. Some of those blessings will never be regained once they reject them either.
