Unfulfilled Longings

Lies Women Believe about Unfulfilled Longings By Nancy Leigh DeMoss

Our society has bought into the philosophy that there is (or ought to be) a remedy (preferably quick and easy) for every unfulfilled longing.

We are encouraged to identify our longings and do whatever is necessary to get those “needs” met. Therefore . . . if you’re hungry, eat. If you want something you can’t afford, charge it. If you crave romance, dress or act in a way that will get men to notice you. If you’re lonely, share your heart with that married man at work.  more

The latter summary is this:

The truth is, every created thing is guaranteed to disappoint us. Things can burn or break or be stolen or get lost. People can move or change or fail or die. It took the loss of some of my dearest loved ones some years ago to awaken me to the truth that I would always live in a state of disappointment if I was looking to people to satisfy me at the core of my being.

More of this is covered in the book Lies Women Believe: And the Truth that Sets Them Free by Nancy Leigh DeMoss.

  1. Ms. DeMoss makes an excellent point. So many people make rash decisions in the pusuit of unfulfilled longings.

Did you know that 70% of divorce proceedings are initiated by wives? When I learned this a few years ago I was stunned because like most women, I grew up believing in the illusion of the abandoned wife as the norm.

What could be the cause of this if not a search for unfulfilled longings? Unfortunately, most often this search leads us to drink from wells that cannot satisfy.

Good post. Thanks for the link.

    Terry,

I knew that women were filing more and more divorces, but no, I did not realize that it was seventy percent! Wow, talk about the effects and fruit of feminism! Sounds more like abandoned husbands now.

Everyone is looking for that elusive item or person who will make them happy. The only problem is once they get it they find they are not happy so they search again. Only Christ can satisfy. But even those of us that know that tend to act as if it is “Christ plus _______” that will make us happy. 🙁

Hope this week continues to go smoothly for you. 🙂
