Little Hints

Ever noticed how you can be listening to someone you don’t know at all but yet walk away saying “that’s a believer”?

I had that experience this weekend in a public setting and with large numbers of public school teachers and students.  No one was blatant and discussed the gospel, but those who speak the same foreign language, understood clearly.  I always enjoy watching and listening to people, especially from a distance.  It is amazing what you can learn.

Believers just have their own vocabulary at times.  Which was so obvious this weekend.  Did you realize how much truth can be hidden in a simple conversation?  Everything from attitude and mannerisms, to little phrases found in Scripture.  Much like when I’ve written letters to missionaries in dangerous situations, you can’t be obvious and blatant about your faith, but every believer understands:

“I don’t want to disappoint my Father.”

What do others notice about you in your daily conversations or public speaking?

Ephesians 4:22-24
22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Philippians 1:27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ:…  KJV

1 Timothy 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.  KJV

1 Peter 3:1-2
1 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;
2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.

These verses all reference our conversation, however the more literal translation to would be life.

However Webster’s 1828 Dictionary has this definition for Conversation:

Conversation –  1. General course of manners; behavior; deportment; especially as it respects morals.

So you can see how life fits better today.  But I think we lose the realization of the impact of our words.

Colossians 4:6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.  ESV

  1. BW, this is so true, and a good reminder to me. You can tell a lot about a person by their words and tone. When I’m not thinking about it, what is mine saying about me? Hmmm.
    Thanks, Wendy

    It was very clear to me that certain people were believers this weekend. Everything from the music they referenced, the other composers, little expressions, mannerisms, just the whole demeanor. It is enough to make you consider what your words and behavior is saying to others. We never know when someone is watching us interact with our children, husbands, strangers or even more so those who have misused us.

    I’m afraid we miss many opportunities just by not being aware of the hidden hints we are giving. Glorifying self or God?

  2. Mark and I have often commented how some people can “ooze” Christianity to the point where they never mention religion, but you just know. Then others, can be saying all day that they are Christians, but you have to wonder. Well, that’s a horse of an whole ‘nother color. Did you guys get much snow?

    I have noticed what you are talking about. Those that talk the talk but don’t walk the walk. We had an experience with that a few weeks ago while driving. Someone felt that another car was out of line and cut them off. They weren’t content to let it slide or take and offense. So at the traffic light the person rolled down the window and let fly many unintelligible angry words and hand gestures. The irony was this person was driving a white PT cruiser with a church’s name printed on the side of the car! It was funny and sad at the same time, even the kids noticed the irony. We agreed we wouldn’t visit that church. :0

    We have had snow. I was out of town Friday but rumor has it we had about 2 inches. Then we had about an inch yesterday morning and then another inch last night. It all melted between times but it has been enough that the five year old thinks it isn’t a big deal anymore! He doesn’t realize how unique it is for us to have three snow episodes within four days.
