All of us heard about the shooting death of “Dr of death” George Tiller. It was all over the news. Even President Obama made a statement after Tiller’s death. News reports told us all about Tiller’s work and his family. Everyone heard about the details of his murder in his home church.
Then this weekend two young preachers were gunned downed while street preaching in Florida. Lyn, of Saved by Grace, shared the news report with me, otherwise, it would have easily been missed. Even when I looked for more information it was hard to find it and I found little more than she had left in the comments. Two men preaching religion shot to death in Boynton Beach
- Why is two young preachers been murdered not news?
- Are these young men not as valuable as “Dr” Tiller was?
- Was race an issue?
- Is age the issue?
- Is their faith the issue?
I think it is very obvious that anytime the news can put Christians, or just those who claim to be Christians, in a bad light they will. Just as when a family homeschools and a crime is committed than the homeschooling is pointed out. Never do they point out that the majority of all crimes are committed by public school students. That isn’t important. Being a church leader and committing a crime gets extra attention, but being a Muslim is not an important part of the consideration in the official military reports from Fort Hood. Remember being repeatedly told not to jump to conclusions despite the evidence that his Muslim faith was a serious factor. Remember this statement:
“I would caution against jumping to conclusions until we get all the facts, … “
Although our president isn’t always so slow to make a judgment as seen in the Cambrige police incident.
“…Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody… “
I think it is very clear that Christians are going to only be portrayed in a poor light if at all possible by the media.
I pray the families of the young preachers are encouraged in the fact that they died serving the Lord and I pray fellow believers can uplift and support them during this time even when the media ignores them.

Yes, media bias is a fact. It angers me, but, if Jesus had to deal with the twisting of His words, accusations, misrepresentations, faithlessness, and downright lies, then I suppose we should not expect anything less. In fact, Jesus warns/promises us so: “These things I command you, that ye love one another. If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.

Wendy,
You know I’m not surprised that the media is biased. But to such an extreme? That I must admit surprises me, because I thought information that affected or interested large numbers of the audience would still be important. Obviously not.
It will only get worse, I’m afraid.

The bias is ridiculous, isn’t it? It shouldn’t be surprising as we should expect disrespect and outright disdain for Christians to increase as time goes by.
It’s just that these people have actually deluded themselves into believing that they are unbiased, dispassionate observers. It’s as if they can’t see that what you DON’T report reveals as much as what you do.

Terry,
That is where a big problem lies, they claim to be unbiased and yet look at what they report and don’t report. Makes you wonder what you never hear about? Sorta like when a journalist was kidnapped and the world of journalism kept it quiet for
weeksseven months! That is a scary thought that something could be held silent for so long by so many (over 40 news agencies worldwide) for their own benefit or the benefit of others. What we are silent about tells much about our beliefs.

I don’t think you’d really want to KNOW how many things get dropped.
The media follows cycles, if child molesting is a HOT topic then you hear tons of reports, if gangs is big then you hear tons of that, or if exposing celebs is big then you’ll get that, it’s quite revolting.
~~I’d be interested to know what kind of name is Tite Sufra (one of the preachers killed) ~~
In fact i’d be weary of how the media might report the incident!

Julius,
I’m sure I wouldn’t want to hear all the news! Normally I don’t watch news and just skim headlines. But I just noticed the big difference in the reporting. I must admit that the ability to keep a news item under wrap for seven months is something to think about.
I know several have made a big deal because the family did not name the church, but if this was gang related that is understandable, especially due to the risk of retaliation for the arrest. It is such a sin-sick world.
