The Word

Well, if you agree that the full Law of Moses is not eternal, but was for the Israelites for a specific time frame, now what?  Have we turned God into a liar?  What do we do with verses that say God’s Word will stand forever?  God’s Word never changes?

Psalms 119:89 (KJV) For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven.

John 17:17 (KJV) Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

So what do we do?

As I’ve said several times before, when we run across an idea or passage that seems to contradict another passage the problem is ours, not God’s.  God is not contradictory nor does He lie. (Hebrews 6:18; Titus 1:2)

Numbers 23:19 (KJV) God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

So we must go back to the Scriptures, prayerfully seeking the answers to what we perceive as contradictions.  Remember that we are to look at the OT through the lens of the NT.

Here is an interesting few verses.

John 1:1 (KJV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Revelation 19:13 (KJV) And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

Even the most basic new believer knows these passages are talking about Jesus Christ Himself being both God and The Word.  The next verses in John explains that even more.  Jesus was in the beginning; He was involved in creation; without Jesus nothing would have been made.

John 1:2-3 (KJV)
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Then John tells us that in Jesus is life and light. (John 1:4)

John 1:14 (KJV) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

So with the understanding that Jesus is The Word, God, Creator, Life, The Light, Grace and Truth now how do we read passages that say God’s Word will last forever?

Psalms 119:11 (KJV) Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

Jesus have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee.

Psalms 119:81 (KJV) My soul fainteth for thy salvation: but I hope in thy word.

My soul longs for your salvation: I hope in Jesus.

Psalms 119:105 (KJV) Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Jesus is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Psalms 119:50 (KJV) This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.

This is my comfort in my affliction: for Jesus has given me life.  (See Psalms 119:50 ESV translation)

2 Timothy 4:2 (KJV) Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

Preach Jesus; …………

John 17:17 (KJV) Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Sanctify them through thy truth (Jesus): Jesus is truth.

John 15:3 (KJV) Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

Now you are clean through Jesus which I have spoken unto you.

Isaiah 40:8 (KJV) The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but Jesus shall stand for ever.

1 Peter 1:23 (KJV) Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

… Jesus, which liveth and abideth for ever.

Psalms 119:147 (KJV) I prevented the dawning of the morning, and cried: I hoped in thy word.

…I hoped in Jesus.

Psalms 33:6 (KJV) By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

By Jesus were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. (compare with John 1:3)

Hebrews 4:12-13 (KJV)
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

For Jesus is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

1 Timothy 4:4-5 (KJV)
4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

Every creature of God is good and nothing to be refused … for it is sanctified by Jesus and prayer.

The Word of God is inseparable from God because it is part and parcel God Himself, in the person of Jesus Christ.
