Mercy Owed to None – J.I. Packer

“[God] shows his freedom and lordship by discriminating between sinners, causing some to hear the gospel while others do not hear it, and moving some of those who hear it to repentance while leaving others in their unbelief, thus teaching his saints that he owes mercy to none and that it is entirely of his grace, not at all through their own effort, that they themselves have found life.”

  1. Sorry, I’m not a Calvinist. (Mary R.) Please don’t take offense. It is true, however, that God does not owe man anything.

No offense taken. Actually I’m not a Calvinist either, I dislike much of what Calvin stood for – Baby baptism, psalms only, etc.

However, I must say that the Lord does cause some to believe and others to not believe. We can change the words around and use calls, faith, etc. but the Lord seems clear that He does the work and we just receive.

Our “faith” is a gift from the Lord.

    Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV)
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

    Our “Choosing” is from Him.

John 15:16 (ESV) You did not choose me, but I chose you ….

Our “Election” is from His choosing.

Mark 13:20 (ESV) …. But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose ….

    All before we were crerated.

Ephesians 1:4 (ESV) even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.

Thankfully, I don’t have to understand it all. The Lord doesn’t even owe me understanding nor an explanation, I just must take His Word for it and then must admit I only do even that by His Grace and Mercy, otherwise I would reject His Word.
