Maybe instead of Sodom we are in Chorazin or Bethasada. Are we not going to be judged more harshly than Sodom and Gomorrah? Remember this passage:
Matthew 11:21-24 (ESV)
21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.
23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
24 But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.”
Are we not more likely to be considered like Chorazin and Bethasada due to the gospel being given to us in full? There is no excuse for our not repenting in “sackcloth and ashes” because we have all the mighty works of Christ and his disciples recorded for us in Scripture. Jesus says that Tyre and Sidon would have repented and that Sodom would have remained until that day due to the mighty works of Christ.
We in “Chorazin and Bethsaida” have free access to the gospel, bible study helps, and good solid teaching of Scripture. It may be hard at times to find a sound Biblical church close by but there are solid churches around and free sermons on the internet.
Maybe we should consider that Christ might be saying now:
“Woe to you, Birmingham!”
“Woe to you, Atlanta!”
“Woe to you, Austin!”
“Woe to you, Snead Crossroads!”
