No Head Full of Froth Here!

Do our Bibles have to be burned, tattered and taken away before we treasure them?

Update: Just so others understand the title, I had posted this quote from Spurgeon the day before.

Many of you know more about your magazines and novels–than what God has written! Many of you will read a novel from the beginning to the end, and what have you got? A head full of froth when you are done! But you cannot read the Bible–that solid, lasting, substantial, and satisfying food goes uneaten, locked up in the cupboard of neglect–while anything that man writes, a best-seller of the day–you greedily devour!

  1. How sobering is that picture? We Americans, with Bibles in every translation and study helps of all kinds, still can’t come to unity of the faith, or walk circumspectly in a way that our Savior isn’t mocked.

And these precious sisters and brothers in the faith are thankful for a burned, tattered page of Scripture.

    How convicting!

It is sad how little we treasure the abundance of freedom we have to read our Bibles openly.

Our Pastor told us of a time when he was preaching in Nicaragua; they always take Bibles to give out to the people there. He said he gave a lady a Bible and was shocked that she opened it and began to tear out pages one by one. But soon he saw why she was doing that. Every person in that large audience got a portion of the Bible for their very own. Why should she have the whole thing when others had none?

I’m afraid what it will take for us to treasure our freedom to have multitudes of Bibles and study helps is serious persecution.
