Quote from the sermon Sunday morning.
“Even our repentance needs to be repented of.”
~~~~~~~~~~~
Puritan saying
This quote can be found in the book of Family Prayers by Maxwell Nicholson from 1874.
“Even our repentance needs to be repented of and our very worship needs to be forgiven.”
Even Spurgeon was known to say: “Even our repentance needs to be repented of!“
I have often thought the same thing. There are times when I have to repent of not being sincere enough while I am repenting or praying.
Teri,
We can’t do anything right due to the sin in our lives. 🙁 Even our good deeds are as filthy rags. (Isaiah 64:6 KJV) I think if the typical church considered the last portion of that statement “our very worship needs to be forgiven.” Our public worship services might be much different.
You are so right! I can’t even begin to imagine how wonderful a truly God centered worship service would be… maybe a bit like Heaven will be?
Isn’t God amazing though? He takes our filthy rags and uses them for His righteous purposes!
Teri,
You know I’ve pondered your statement “He takes our filthy rags and uses them for His righteous purposes!” Would you not agree that the Lord takes our filthy rags and gives us the robe of righteousness through Christ? Thus replacing our filthy rags with righteousness from Christ. This verse is what makes me think along those lines.
Just thoughts running through my head. 🙂
