Spurgeon on Public Schools

Can geography teach them the way to Heaven,

or arithmetic remove their countless sins?

The more of secular knowledge our juveniles acquire,

the more will they need to be taught in the fear of the Lord.

To leave our youthful population in the hands of secular teachers,

will be to sell them to the Ishmaelites.

  1. Spurgeon was so wise. I had a friend tell me recently that she very much wishes she could homeschool. Besides the same reasons I have, there are also some other things (such as her 10 year old getting accused for sexual harassment-which it turned out to be a comment made by another kid, not him). i know that there are some good-hearted people in the public school system, but there are also some not so good ones. I feel that my children are much better off at home.

Sometimes it is amazing how you can read something from years ago and it sounds like it was written for today. Like it says in Ecclesiastes 1:9 there is nothing new under the sun. 🙂

A 10 year old and sexual harassment? Mine at that age wouldn’t even understand the concept! I have never once regretted not sending my children to public school.

  2. Thank you for sharing this quote! This is quite eye opening and gets to the heart of the struggle that I, and I believe many others, have when trying to decide how to best educate our children.
A side note questions for you Berean wife, what style of teaching to you use for your children? I am deep in research right now and would like to know more about your particular methods.

Some people do struggle and contemplate the issue of schooling. But what amazes me is those who never even consider what they should do. Some folks spend more time thinking about what new cell phone to buy than about the education of their children.

I’ll send you an email about my homeschooling.
