Why Do Women Often Fall Prey to False Doctrine?

There is a clear Biblical answer why women often fall prey to false doctrine but it isn’t gonna make you feel better about it.  Actually it is painful to think about.  This is Paul writing to Timothy about issues in the church

I’m going share two verses from a multitude of translations just so you can get the full effect and meaning.

2 Tim 3:6-7

6 For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions,

7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. ESV

2 Tim 3:6-7

6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,

7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. KJV

2 Tim 3:6-7

6 For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts,

7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. NKJV

2 Tim 3:6-7

6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires,

7 always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. NIV

2 Tim 3:6-7

6 For among them are those who worm their way into homes and captivate silly and weak-natured and spiritually dwarfed women, loaded down with [the burden of their] sins [and easily] swayed and led away by various evil desires and seductive impulses.

7 [These weak women will listen to anybody who will teach them]; they are forever inquiring and getting information, but are never able to arrive at a recognition and knowledge of the Truth. AMP

Weak, silly, gullible, weak-willed, weak-natured, spiritually dwarfed women.

Literally the Greek translation is “little women” and it isn’t talking about size.

Ouch!

Thanks for posting this and the previous one on how doctrine affects our lives…such practical applications of the subject of doctrine continue to be eye opening and GOOD!!!!!

    Llaine,

Hey, then I’ve met my goal. Encouraging everyone to be Berean checking everything to see what God’s Word says. 🙂

I was having a little trouble with the next Titus 2 lesson. It just wasn’t sounding right, it wouldn’t transition and flow well. Then just last night lo and behold there was the answer right in front of my face literally – verses 2 Timothy 3:10 -15. Now I can’t wait to sit down and work on it again.

  2. Pretty good topic so far.

I don’t quite know if I qualify as a silly woman, but I sure hope, in God’s eyes, I am not.

Thanks for the thought provoking subject.

    God bless.

    Dora,

    Thank you.

I’m sure we all have spells in our lives where we could be called “silly” women. But hopefully, they are short lived and decrease as we mature in the faith. The problem is when we think we’ve got it all figured out and quit examining ourselves for false doctrine.

  3. It doesn’t say anything about ALL women, but specific kinds of women. Those terms can easily apply to some men too

    Riki,

True it does not say all women. However, there is a reason that the Bible is specific and addresses this to women. Obviously there is more of a tendency for women to be led astray in this manner. There are verses that are focused specifically towards men such as:

Colossians 3:21 (ESV) Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.

When a verse gets that specific in addressing a portion of people then we should pay extra special attention to it and how it applies to us.
