Unbelief and Spiritual Depression

Spiritual Depression: Its Causes and Cure by David Martyn Lloyd-Jones

Indeed I can put it, finally, like this; the ultimate cause of all spiritual depression is unbelief. For if it were not for unbelief even the devil could do nothing. It is because we listen to the devil instead of listening to God that we go down before him and fall before his attacks.

  1. We also read in Hebrews, that they could not enter in, because of unbelief.

If we cannot believe God, there is no one we can believe. If we do believe others more than God, how are we not turning them into our own god?

I asked someone years ago, not a Christian, who do you trust more, God or yourself?

    He didn’t answer.

    How do you answer?

We all struggle at times believing God and that He will keep His Word. He says “all” things work together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purposes ( Romans 8:28-29) and yet what do we do but question the Lord and His decisions.

But yet at times I meet “believers” who seem to trust everyone, even the government, more than they trust the Lord. (Notice the quote marks.) While we may at times fall into the sin of unbelief, continual unbelief should cause us to question ourselves.
