Gaining the World and Losing Your Children

We as parents must often reevaluate our purpose in life.

What is your purpose?

What is your purpose in raising your children?

My purpose is to Glorify God in all I do, albeit I fail mightily at times.

1 Corinthians 10:31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. ESV

Romans 15:5-6
5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus,
6 that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ

1 Corinthians 6:19-20
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,
20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body

Revelation 15:4 Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.” ESV

My purpose for raising my children is for the same reason to Glorify God. I am striving to raise them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord in order to Glorify God in what I do and so that they will Glorify God in all they do.

Deuteronomy 6:5-7
5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.
7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

Paul Washer discusses parenting specifically for Fathers, although it is very helpful for mothers also. He covers quality time verses quantity time.

One statement he makes is so true – If sports builds character what about the NFL or the NBA?

How many parents focus on their child and sports and yet they forget the really important thing?

Paul Washer – Sermon In Birmingham, Alabama

Paul Washer was in Birmingham, Alabama preaching last night at:

Todd Wilson is the Pastor

Pastor – [email protected]

Recorded sermons (CD or audio cassette) – [email protected]

The sermons there can be found in the sermon archives.

We have visited at Grace Covenant but we found the hour drive through Birmingham to be too difficult for every service.

However, we might have have gone to hear Paul Washer but we had other commitments. My husband was preaching at another church that evening in the opposite direction. 🙂

The attack on men and fathers.

Stupid. Lazy. Uninvolved. Ignorant. Timid. Detached. Neurotic. Weak. Powerless. Unreliable. Ineffectual. Irresponsible.

What do all these words have in common? They are all descriptions of how men and fathers are depicted in today’s Western culture. …

Watch Out for Myths About Fatherhood

The role of the father is increasingly problematic in the context of modern American culture. Fatherhood has been marginalized and the rule and authority of fathers have been depreciated, ridiculed, and continuously redefined. From the Berenstain Bears to The Simpsons, fathers are all too often the object of ridicule or the subject of the laugh line.

Of course, some fathers bring this marginalization upon themselves as they either neglect or forfeit their own fatherly responsibilities. In many sectors of our society, fathers are most noted by their absence. Indeed, millions of American children are growing up without any significant father figure, much less their biological father. …

Family Series Part 3 (Responsibility, The Duty of Fathers) by Paul Washer Audio Sermon

Ephesians 6:1-4
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise),
3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Proverbs 4:1-4
1 Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight,
2 for I give you good precepts; do not forsake my teaching.
3 When I was a son with my father, tender, the only one in the sight of my mother,
4 he taught me and said to me, “Let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments, and live.

Gospel Healing for Hurting Marriages by Voddie Baucham

Gospel Healing for Hurting Marriages by Voddie Baucham

In an age when Christians seek therapy before the seek the Lord, it is important to be reminded that God is a primary, not a secondary source when it comes to healing hurting marriages. Far from being silent on the issue of conflict resolution, the Bible has much to say on the subject.

Church Conference 2009 Noblit – Counseling Seekers

Counseling Seekers by Jeff Noblit

The problem is there is little to no counseling done.

There is a numbers idolatry today.

No man can judge whether a person is saved or not.

An old method of joining the church was by “Experience.”

Only the Lord adds to the number of the church.

Acts 2:47 And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. ESV

Often people will say that the Acts church would baptize the new converts right away. That is true but the Acts church was in a different context.

Start of the Church
Miraculous Events

When new believers joined the church they were ostracized by their families and suffered intense persecution. Joining the church was not the light matter that it is in today’s churches in America.

I. Discerning Awakening, Conviction and Conversion

A. Awakening

Heb 6:4-6
4 For it is impossible to restore again to repentance those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit,
5 and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come,
6 if they then fall away, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.

Tasting is not swallowing.

Mark 4:3-8
3 “Listen! A sower went out to sow.
4 And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it.
5 Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil.
6 And when the sun rose it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away.
7 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain.
8 And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold
.” ESV

B. Conviction

John 16:8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: ESV

Seeing self as corrupt not just their actions.

C. Conversion

Rising of faith in the heart.

II. The Counseling Session

A. Scriptures

B. Holy Spirit

C. Knowledgeable Counselors – Knows the Word of God – Rom 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. ESV

D. Tools available – CD’s, Books, Faith cometh by hearing

Press upon them their lostness.

Look for the witness of the Spirit.

Rom 8:16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, … ESV

Give Homework.

True Church Conference 2009 – David Miller

I really enjoyed getting to listen to David Miller this weekend. This was the first time I had heard him.

The Repentance of Nineveh 2/20/2009

Jonah First Missionary of record. Tradition says that he was the Widow of Zarephath’s son who was raised from the dead by Elijah.

Jonah’s theology was wrong because he didn’t believe in the omnipresence of God. He tried to run away!

The warning to the Ninevites was not necessary or deserved.

The main point of this story is not Jonah and the Whale the main point is that God granted repentance to the Ninevites.

Grace always takes the initiative!

600,000 – 1 million repented in one day. This was a one day evangelism crusade of legendary importance.

There were no “seekers” in Niveva!

Jonah was sent to preach repentance.

  • Not to lead a cruise,

  • Not to give his testimony,

  • Not to share,

  • Not to prayer walk around the city,

  • But to preach about the intended destruction!
