The Hiding Place – Free Audio Book

Christian Audio is offering The Hiding Place as the free book of the month.  Our curriculum uses The Hiding Place in the seventh grade as one of the literature reading selections.  Listening to the audio is allowed after the book is read. 🙂

The Hiding Place

The amazing story of Corrie ten Boom, a heroine of the Dutch Resistance who helped Jews escape from the Nazis and became one of the most remarkable evangelists of the 20th century, is told in her classic memoir, now retold for a new generation.

God’s Will Is Not Thwarted

God’s will is not thwarted even by our foolish decisions.

We do have a responsibility to make wise decisions or to discover the will of God, whichever term we may prefer to use. But God’s plan for us is not contingent upon our decisions. God’s plan is not contingent at all. God’s plan is sovereign. It includes our foolish decisions as well as our wise ones.

No Plan Can Succeed Against Him

We make plans, but those plans can succeed only when they are consistent with God’s purpose. No plan can succeed against Him. No one can straighten what He makes crooked or make crooked what He has made straight. No emperor, king, supervisor, teacher, or coach can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not first decreed to either make it happen or permit it to happen. No one can say, “I will do this or that,” and have it happen if it is not part of God’s sovereign will.

Isn’t that refreshing?

Can You Trust Him?

Confidence in the sovereignty of God in all that affects us is crucial to our trusting Him. If there is a single event in all of the universe that can occur outside of God’s sovereign control, then we cannot trust Him. His love may be infinite, but if His power is limited and His purpose can be thwarted, we cannot trust Him.

Trusting God: Even When Life Hurts –  Jerry Bridges

Does God have complete control of everything?

Can you trust Him to accomplish His will?

Or is He at the mercy of man?

What limits God?

Can His will be thwarted?

Back to Homeschooling

We’ve had a break the past few weeks from homeschooling.  Between my husband and oldest son being off several days, everyone being sick for a week or two and new baby chicks very little has been done around here.   🙁  Time to get back to work with the chores and school work.   Lesson plans and report cards are due soon also.  Those to me are the hardest part of homeschooling; record keeping.

Here is a list of books to use for homeschooling.  They are based off of the Robinson Curriculum,  The nice thing is that these are available online for free.

In Christ Alone: Living the Gospel Centered Life [Kindle Edition]

In Christ Alone: Living the Gospel Centered Life [Kindle Edition] – free

Dr. Sinclair B. Ferguson

Noted theologian, pastor, and educator Dr. Sinclair B. Ferguson explores aspects of the person and work of Jesus in his latest book, In Christ Alone: Living the Gospel-Centered Life. This collection of articles, published earlier in Tabletalk magazine and Eternity Magazine, is designed to help believers gain a better understanding of their Savior and the Christian faith, and to live out that faith in their day-to-day lives. In fifty short chapters arranged in six sections, Dr. Ferguson shows that Christ, who is fully God, took on humanity that He might be the Great High Priest of His people as well as the once-for-all sacrifice; that He now ministers to His people through His Spirit, crowning them with great and precious blessings; and that believers are called to duty, from cultivating contentment to mortifying sin. In Christ Alone is packed full of nuggets of Scriptural truth that will spark and fan the flames of the believer s love for the Savior who is so beautiful in His person and so faithful in His work on behalf of His beloved sheep.

{Now there is also Kindle for the web which means you can buy books and read them when online but it doesn’t require downloading the Kindle for PC program.  This is a good option if you use multiple computers or your computer is full. :) The free kindle books are available a short time, they are done sorta like a sale and end quickly so you can’t wait a couple of days to “purchase” the free book. If you don’t actually have a kindle you can get the Kindle for PC which will allow you to read kindle books for free. There are also kindle versions for a blackberry and for an iPhone.}

Are You a Deist?

Does God actually control the circumstances of our lives, or do “bad” things just happen to us because we live in a sin-cursed world?

Randomness, luck, chance, fate. This is modern man’s answer to the age-old question, “Why?” Of course, if one dismisses the whole idea of God, as many do, then there is no other alternative. Many, while not dismissing the idea of God, have fabricated a God of their own speculation. Seventeenth-century deism constructed a God who created a universe and then walked away to leave it running according to its natural laws and man’s devices. Many people today are practical deists.

Even Christians often think as deists today. Many accept the concept that God is sovereign but believe that He chooses not to exercise His sovereignty in the daily affairs of our lives. As one writer put it, “We know that God is sovereign, but we also know that, in His sovereignty, God has placed us in a world of sin and suffering from which we have no immunity,” and again, “God’s love … for us, does not place us in a protected position.””

If God controls the circumstances of the sparrow, how much more does He control the circumstances that affect us? God does not walk away and leave us to the mercy of uncontrolled random or chance events.

Potential Christmas Presents

Potential Christmas Presents, if you do Christmas.  Around here half of everybody has birthdays between Thanksgiving and New Years.  So we are in Birthday Present mode!

Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine $49.99 $26.99  From CBDReformed

or

Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine as low as $26.29 new or $19.00 used from Amazon.

That’s alot cheaper than when I bought the book several years ago.  Shipping might make a difference as to which seller is cheaper.

Couldn’t tell you too much about this set. I have gotten it free for my Kindle but haven’t attempted it yet.

And of course a Kindle makes a great gift for someone that reads alot.  I’ve been enjoying mine.  To me it is easier to hold than a book.   Definitely easier than something the size of Grudem! :0

Now off to prepare for a ball game.  The baby (even if he’s six) is dressed as the Greensocks and some friends are coming over to play ball.  He so excited that he’s wearing batting gloves now at 8:30 and they aren’t expected until this afternoon.   Play Ball !!!!!!!!!!!   Go Greensocks!

CBD Reformed

I don’t know how I missed this but Christian Books Distributors has CBD Reformed a website specializing in Reformed type books.  I have a love / hate relationship with CBD. 🙁  They have great prices and they are really hard to beat with the prices.  However, they sell anything and everything that might be construed to be “Christian”.

Nevertheless the CBD Reformed site has books from authors such as Warfield, Grudem, Piper, Hodge, and Calvin’s Commentaries.  This may be a helpful resource since many times good sound Christian books often seem to be so much more expensive than the books full of fluff.  Although I guess fluff is cheaper to produce! 🙂

Am sure there are still books that aren’t sound even in the reformed website but they should be much fewer.  Use discretion when choosing to buy a book from CBD Reformed.
