Have You Been Exposed To The Light?

Ephesians 5:11-14
11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.
12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret.
13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible,
14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

A few days ago Berean Husband was teaching in Ephesians. When he got to a particular verse in chapter five I remembered something from years ago when I worked. It is amazing that I had never thought of this connection before. But then the Lord will reveal more and more of His Word as we read and ponder it.

Ephesians 5:13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, ESV

Years ago I worked as a Veterinary Technician in an Animal Hospital. Often we had to x-ray an animal for broken bones or to see the latest item a chewing puppy consumed. Often good x-rays required lots of work in positioning wiggly animals in uncomfortable positions or else the animal had to be sedated for a short period of time to get a good x-ray. It was really a bad day when we messed up the x-ray and had to do it over.

I worked in the animal hospital long before there was an automatic x-ray developing machine affordable enough for a small hospital. We developed x-rays in the old fashioned way much like camera film developing.

Getting a good x-ray and developing it was quite a process. We had to load the sheet of x-ray film into a metal x-ray cartridge. This cartridge would lock and seal tightly so that no light could enter. After the x-ray was taken then the cartridge was taken back to the developing room.

Loading, unloading and developing the x-ray required total darkness. We didn’t even have a “red light” at that time. Any amount of light would expose the film and ruin it. Where I worked didn’t have an official darkroom. All we had was a converted closet. This meant that upon entering the room, rolled towels had to be placed at the base of the door to block all light. Everything was done in total darkness by feeling and mostly by memory of studying the room in the light.

Woe, to the person who accidentally opened that door during development. Any amount of light, even a pin point would ruin the x-ray and cause everything to be done all over.

Once we walked in darkness much like that “darkroom” closet. But we didn’t even realize we were in the dark. Our eyes had adjusted to the dark. But God’s Word is the Light that will expose all darkness.

John 8:12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” ESV

John 12:46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. ESV

John 3:20-21
20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.
21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been carried out in God.”
ESV

We are to become lights and expose all the darkness. Just a pinprick of light can expose the darkness.

John 12:36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” ESV

Romans 13:12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. ESV

2 Corinthians 6:14 Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? ESV

ESV

If we have been truly exposed to the Light (God’s Light of His Word) then we are forever changed.

Just like when an x-ray is exposed to the light there is no un-exposing it. It has forever been altered.

Have you been exposed to the Light?

Are you exposing others to the Light?

When you see the darkness, are you letting in the Light to expose it?
