Fulfilled obligations?

Matthew 5:17 (ESV) “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

Matthew 5:17 (KJV) Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Previously we looked at Matthew 5:17 in this post Sermon on the Mount – Matthew 5:17-18.  We looked at what the word fulfilled means in Scripture.  But now lets think about what fulfilled means today to us.

When someone fulfills an obligation we understand that it is done and finished.  If I need to write a report once I have done that report then it is a fulfilled responsibility.  Fulfilled items are those we get to finally mark off our list.  Now granted we as humans don’t always fulfill our requirements fully or in the manner we should.  However, when Jesus fulfilled the Law, He completed it fully and perfectly.

When we have a home mortgage that we are paying we have a responsibility to fulfill.  Despite what many people do by defaulting on mortgages that is a responsibility that we are required to fulfill.  Yet what happens when we have paid off that mortgage?  We have fulfilled our responsibility.  Can you imagine the uproar if the mortgage company came and asked you to continue paying on that mortgage after it was paid in full?

Think of how that applies to the Scripture.
