Where Are The Youth Leaving The Church Going?

Constructing Your Own Beliefs in Worldviews: Apologetics Resource Center Newsletter

Barna research reveals that there has been a 92% increase in the number of unchurched Americans in the past thirteen years. In 1991, there were 39 million, and in 2004 there were 75 million.

Where are they going? One direction is toward Wicca (witchcraft) or Paganism. Researchers are projecting that Wicca could soon emerge as the third largest religion in America by 2012. This projection is based on the fact that the Wiccan community is doubling every 18 months and will reach 20 million by 2012.

What is fueling this growth?

~ Dissatisfaction with the average church.

~ It appeals to females that are well indoctrinated in feminism.

~ TV shows

Sabrina, the Teenage Witch
Buffy the Vampire Slayer

~ Books

Harry Potter
Twilight (although actually about Vampires)

~ Environmentalism is a strong feature.

~ A desire for no rules or no “thou shalt not’s.”

~ Can be a solitary practice or practiced in groups.

  1. Wicca and other neo-pagan religions do not recruit. What I remember most is that Christians were always out and witnessing. The only people I see do that anymore are the Jehovah Witnesses. Maybe people don’t feel like anyone cares about them anymore and Wiccans/Pagans are considered “misfits” in the global religious picture. This may lead those unguided to join them.
