How many of you know what that word is?
Antinomianism – is against the Law or Lawlessness
Antinominism is the opposite of Legalism. They are two ditches along the narrow road or through the strait gate (Matthew 7:13,14).
anomos – without law, lawless, transgressor, unlawful, wicked.
1 Timothy 1:9-11 (KJV)
9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
11 According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
Luke 22:37 (KJV) For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.
The underlined words below are all a form of the word anomos:
1 Corinthians 9:21 (KJV) To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.
2 Peter 2:7-8 (KJV)
7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:
8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds)
Many times those who do not follow the Law of Moses are called “lawless”, by those who teach following the Law of Moses.
Yet look at 1 Timothy 1:9-11 again, here it is in the ESV.
1 Timothy 1:9-11 (ESV)
9 understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers,
10 the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine,
11 in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted.
Who are the “lawless and disobedient,” “ungodly and sinners,” and “the unholy and profane”?
The rest of the verses tell us.
“those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine,”
Notice nothing about what they eat, circumcision, Sabbath observance, etc.
But are those who do not follow the Law of Moses, yet truly are believers, are they really Lawless?
