What Are You Doing …

Found on a local church sign:

What are you doing for God that he can’t do for himself alone?

What exactly does that mean?

Considering this is on a church which regularly has such strange signs, I suspect it isn’t just to encourage others to think about God’s lack of need for us.

What cannot God do that man can “help” with?

God cannot sin.

Man can.

But that isn’t helping or doing for God.

A common fallacy is the teaching that God needs man to accomplish His goals.  I have heard that so many times sitting in church.

God needs us to do this ….

God needs us to do that ….

God does not need man, man needs God.

Acts 17:24-25 (ESV)

24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man,
25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.

Job 35:7 (ESV) If you are righteous, what do you give to him? Or what does he receive from your hand?

Psalms 50:12 (ESV) “If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine.

Maybe a better question would be:

What are you trying to do that God has already done for you?

Are you trying to earn your way into Heaven?

  1. Amen! When I first realized this, at the age of 19, I felt freedom for the first time. It still gives me chills. He did it ALL. I can’t give or do anything for Him. And He still desires me and calls me unto Himself.

Oh that everyone would know the freedom from works! Because we have freedom from works we can actually do the works we are commanded to.

Thank you Fara, I needed this reminder today.

    Mama Hen,

You know you got me to thinking of the pinnacle points along my journey as a Christian. There have been several big moments of “Aha!”, where I finally had some scales removed and realized some new depth in Scripture. Realizing that I must not try to, nor couldn’t possibly, earn my Salvation was one of those. Realizing that God’s love for His children doesn’t ebb and flow with our walk. Meaning God doesn’t love me more today if I spend 2 hours in prayer and Bible study than He did yesterday when I didn’t.

The truth shall set you free indeed. 🙂

  2. Mark and I agree often that church signs would be better left blank than some of the (not so) clever sayings that are posted on them.

Oh, if they would just put up a meaningful verse instead.
