2 Peter 3:9

In reading By Grace Alone by Jim McClarty, I came across an interesting point I had never really noticed. Many have heard the verse in 2 Peter 3:9 used to defend the Arminian position that all men must do is choose faith in Christ to be saved. That the onus is on man because God has done His part and He has provided Salvation and Repentance for all men.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

What is the context of this passage?

Paul is speaking to believers who are losing hope saying, “Where is the promise of His coming?, 1 Peter 3:4.

We know Paul is speaking to believers because of several verses.

1 Peter 1:1-2 “…To those who are elect exiles of the dispersion … according to the foreknowledge of God …

2 Peter 2:1 “… To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ …”

Even 2 Peter 3:8, the immediately proceeding verse, addresses the listeners as “beloved” meaning the believers. We cannot take promises given to believers as belong to the whole world. Just as when I am speaking to my children and say “All of us are going to Walmart.” We all know that does not mean all the world nor all my town. Context and audience are very important factors to sound Bible Study.
