While today is April Fool’s Day, it is a good time to consider what the Lord says about fools. We all are guilty of being foolish at times. Responding hastily, showing our irritation with others, behaving as if there is no God, and anger with a brother are all foolish behaviors.
Proverbs 10:23 (ESV) Doing wrong is like a joke to a fool, but wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding.
Psalms 14:1 (ESV) The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good.
Proverbs 10:14 (ESV) The wise lay up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool brings ruin near.
Proverbs 12:15-16 (ESV)
15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.
16 The vexation of a fool is known at once, but the prudent ignores an insult.
Proverbs 18:2 (ESV) A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.
Proverbs 29:20 (ESV) Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
Matthew 5:22 (ESV) But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.
Luke 12:18-21 (ESV)
18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.
19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’
20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’
21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
Don’t be guilty of being a fool according to the Lord. But is is fine to be a fool according to the world.
1 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV) Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.
